How Does Asphalt Paving Jobs Work?

There are many different types of pavements that can be installed in a variety of commercial settings but one of the most effective are asphalt paving. Street Paving is used all over the country on all kinds of roads and its durability makes it one of the most commonly installed options. Asphalt paving is made from crushed rock, gravel and liquid concrete and the mixture is then ground with machines. The outcome is a durable, slip-resistant and cost-effective paving solution.

Asphalt paving is made through two processes; precast and solid. Precast paving is more environmentally sound than solid paving as the aggregates do not need to be replaced unlike with solid aggregates. When making asphalt paving for commercial use, crushed rocks are first brought to the site and then the rocks are placed on a specially prepared machine-broken bed. Then the rocks are poured onto the bed and left to harden. After the rocks are hardened, they are driven or shoveled into position and leveled with grinding tools. This whole process can take up to three days for each piece but once the pieces are in place, they are ready to be used immediately.

Solid asphalt pavements, on the other hand, contain large amounts of aggregates such as sand, gravel and concrete that cannot be easily moved to varying shapes. In order to ensure that the surface of the asphalt paving is smooth and even, a binder is used to help adhere the aggregates to the rough surface. A binder is a thin piece of paper or cardboard that contains glue or epoxy. It is placed between the aggregates and helps them adhere to the surface better than without it. Larger aggregates sometimes need to be supplemented with additional additives to make them stick to the concrete properly.

The final step of installing asphalt paving is to apply the asphalt cement. The asphalt cement is generally made from cement dust or asphalt dust that is recovered from an old road or sidewalk. An open-ended steel frame is typically used to hold the aggregate mixture up against the concrete. The frame is then cemented into place and left to dry. The frame is typically reinforced with rebar to make sure that it does not collapse due to excessive weight.

All three of these methods of Site Grading are used in residential driveways. However, blacktop paving has distinct advantages when compared to these other two processes. For one, it is faster to complete, which makes it more affordable for most home owners; it is also easier to install compared to other paving techniques.

Once the asphalt paving is complete, it must dry to a high gloss and then be driven slowly to reduce traffic damage. When driving on the surface beneath the asphalt mix, you will see that it has a nice, even texture that does not have many different textures to it. If you notice any bumps or potholes in the asphalt, they can usually be sanded and leveled out using fine grit sandpaper. To prevent asphalt potholes from forming in the future, homeowners are recommended to compact the newly poured asphalt mix by gently scraping the dry asphalt and adding new asphalt mix over the area.
